Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
