This Dramatic Portrait
In the struggle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for greed in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic about the fallen televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor acts as the venal Jim, who states early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about profiting from the people's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, overdone appearance and bad faith, however Jessica Chastain succeeds to present the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, late night, on Film4
